Supervision gives you somewhere to step back and think about your work.
You might want to talk through a client you feel stuck with, about something happening in the counselling relationship, an ethical question, or something about the work that is bothering you.
Or you just need another counsellor to look at it with you and help you work out what might be going on.
how I work
I use the STEP UP supervision framework, which gives supervision some structure without making it rigid.
I want supervision to be somewhere you can talk openly about your work, including the things you are unsure about.
I will ask questions and sometimes offer a different way of looking at something.
There may also be times when I challenge you, particularly if I think there is something worth looking at more closely.
Supervision is not about getting everything right. It's about thinking about the work, understanding what is happening and working out what might help.
developing as a counsellor
Supervision isn't only for difficult cases.
It's somewhere to think about how you are developing as a counsellor, what you are becoming more confident with and where you might want more experience or training.
You may want to explore a particular way of working, think about the kind of clients you want to work with, or talk about where you want your practice to go.
I don't expect you to work the way I do. Part of supervision is helping you work out what fits you as a counsellor.
